Collecting IEP data from your wrist
Pulling out a phone changes the room. Students notice, and for behaviour data that matters, because the thing you are counting can change the moment you visibly start counting it. A watch does not have that problem.
The cases where a wrist genuinely wins
Not everything belongs on a watch. Three things do.
- Frequency counts. Tallying call-outs, initiations, or requests across a period. One tap per instance, eyes still on the room.
- Interval recording. Whole, partial and momentary interval all need a timer that nudges you. A wrist tap is the right amount of interruption; a phone alarm is too much.
- Duration. Start and stop a timer without breaking eye contact.
Where it does not help
Anything needing context. A prompt level, a setting tag, a note about what happened before the behaviour. Those want a keyboard or your voice, and they are worth the extra few seconds because they are what make the number interpretable later.
Trying to force nuanced observation onto a small screen produces data that is fast to collect and useless to read.
Haptics do the work
The point of wrist capture is that you never look at it. A tap confirms the count landed; a different pattern marks an interval boundary. If you have to check the screen to know whether it registered, the device has failed at the only job it had.
Battery and reality
A full teaching day of interval recording is not a heavy load, but a watch that dies at lunch is worse than paper. Capture should queue locally and sync when the phone is back in range, so a flat battery or a dead spot costs you nothing but the tail of the session.
The rule of thumb
If the observation is a number you can produce with one tap, put it on the wrist. If it needs a sentence, it belongs somewhere with a keyboard.
